I love working with repeat clients, especially when I’ve gotten to know them on a more personal level and see who they really are. I was excited with Kirsten Klug of Bamboo River Press called me for a new Montavilla Sewing Centers commercial. Last years was so much fun that I jumped at the prospect of doing another.

Yet again, a great experience with both Kirsten and Fir as well as great talent. Here is the commercial for your viewing enjoyment!

Haunting of Sunshine Girl

A month or so ago I was hired to do makeup for a friend’s daughter for her web series. Sunshine has her own youtube series called The Haunting of Sunshine Girl. By word of mouth only, this little series has gone completely viral and now has hundreds of subscribers and gets a ton of hits per day. Its pretty amazing and they are just continuing to grow and are now even working on raising funds for a short film. It’s pretty wild! Check it out!

Amazing photographer Levy Moroshan took these senior photos for Sunshine and I did her hair and makeup. She really is a lovely young lady and lots of fun to be around. Here are a few of my favorite images…

A few weeks ago I worked on a collaborative project with Levy Moroshan and Aimee Jadore and a few other peeps in conjunction with Betsey Johnson Portland that was really inspiring and lovely. It was based on Anne Leibovitz and her Alice in Wonderland story. We had 2 custom built sets and 3 beautiful models and 7-8 amazing dresses.

The result was absolute divine magic!

The story is forthcoming but here is a little teaser of one of the loveliest beauty models in Portland… Ms. Emma Pellett. I do love her features!

Ryonet and UV makeup

Sometimes I get hired to do projects that simply thrill me to no end! This project was one of them!

I was contacted to do a job for Ryonet Corporation that involved drawing circuit boards and geometric shapes on faces in UV makeup. YES!!! It sounded so fun!!! I spent hours drafting out face charts, doing research, playing with colors. It was more than ready when the job arrived!

The job was truly awesome! The people were super cool to work with and the concept was RAD and it looked really cool! Here are some teaser images and the cyber blog… and the VIDEO!!!!

New Lifestyle Images by Matthew Brush

Wow… I am way behind on updating this blog. I swear I have the best intentions but life and work just take over and then I look and its months later!

A few months ago I did a shoot with Matthew Brush and a fit model for Nike named Kerby. The purpose was to get some lifestyle and fitness images for her book and for my portfolio. I had never worked with Matthew but was really looking forward to collaborating with him and getting some of his work in my book. The overall experience was really good and he was a dream to work with. I love that he let me do my thing and trusted me with doing “lifestyle” makeup which is really pretty light and basic.

BEST WEB DESIGNER IN THE BIZ

I have said this before and I will say it again… Joel Conrad Bechtolt is truly the best web designer in the business.

He built my old Blush site and it was pretty amazing. Then he built my new Blush site and it is truly incredible. With his help, my business has grown, my exposure multiplied, and the quality and quantity of jobs I have done has far surpassed previous years.

How you may ask? Simply thru my web site. He designed a pretty killer site that gets google ranking and is very pretty to look at. He took all the pictures of the flowers on the site. He took the picture of the water. He designed my galleries and when I need the galleries rotated from horizontal to vertical, he did that too.

I love my web site. I love all the work he put into it. I love that when I do something ridiculous and “break” something while updating it, I can contact him and he will walk me through it. He has the patience of a saint at times.

If you ever need a web site… one designed, one reworked, one spruced up or made better, Joel is your man! Come check out his web site… he finally has one! It took like forever for the cobbler to make his own shoes but its pretty great! Joel Conrad Bechtolt

Sweaty Sweat Sweat

I have had the honor and fun opportunity to work with Portland photographer Andy Batt and the sketch comedy group Sweat for the last few years. Its a dream team of hilarity and puns. I always look forward to whatever outlandish adventure awaits and I love that I get to bring my “sweat” supplies along whether it be Pam cooking spray, glycerin water, or this year, my much greener option of Coconut Oil.

This year we deviated from the heavily “sweaty” laced appearances to a more refined “sweaty” look, complete with suits and a stretch limo. Such sophistication! I don’t think I have laughed this hard at a shoot in a long time. The inside of the limo might have been their finest hour on a shoot to date!

MAKEUP NOTE: I tried to be more “green” and used Coconut oil for the “sweaty” look instead of Pam cooking spray and its a lot harder to use. Since its a fatty oil, the skin immediately absorbs it so I was constantly reapplying the oil the the comedians faces about every 20 min or so. This doesn’t happen with Pam. So if you want to go “green”, be prepared and have an extra jar of coconut oil on hand. You will need it!

OVERDRIVE by Doug Hoeschler

I recently finally got to work with a photographer I have been dying to work with for years…. Doug Hoeschler. His work is simply amazing and finally the stars aligned and we were able to make things work so that we could create something beautiful.

Hair was provided by my dear and incredibly talented friend Kira Pinski.

What’s the deal with primers?

“What’s the deal with primers? I hear this question a lot. What’s the point? What are they used for? Why do we need them or not need them? Are they just a gimmick? Why do I need one more product to put on my face… and the list of questions goes on and on…

Primers are pretty cool. They put a protective “veil” on the face that does 2 things: (1) if you are dry, it keeps your skin from absorbing the water out of your foundation, helping it to wear better and longer, and (2) it you are oily, it will keep your makeup from melting off or sliding off your face. It will also fill in deeper pores and smooth out the texture of your skin so that it looks more even.

I’m a big fan of primers. The one caveat here is silicone based primers. For instance, Smashbox Primer is a silicone based primer. It gets great reviews but if you are like me and have an allergy to cheaper grades of silicone, it will burn your skin.

Always check products on the inside of your inner arm by the elbow or behind your ear. I prefer the inner arm so I can see if my skin turns red.

The one exception I have found is Youngblood Mineral Primer. It has that silk-to-powder finish within seconds of application, it’s clear and lightweight in texture, feels amazing on the skin and helps foundation to just glide on….both liquid and powder foundations. The best part is that it is richly formulated with vitamins and minerals, protects skin from environmental damage, and is also paraben and cruelty-free.

I also really like Laura Mercier Foundation Primers. They come in original formula, hydrating, oil free, and mineral. The mineral is great for mineral makeup obviously but also for oily skin or larger pores. I personally wear the hydrating formula since I am dry.

I would definitely recommend checking out foundation primers. They really do help your makeup wear better, longer, and if you are an actor or model, this will be very important for how you look on camera.
